MANCHESTER UNIVERSITY MUSIC SOCIETY
Communications on behalf of the MUMS Committee
November 2, 2020.
Statement by the President
Dear MUMS members,
I hope you are keeping positive and testing negative! As the country has gone into a second national lockdown, I am speaking on behalf of the committee to provide you with an update on the kinds of activities you can get involved in given the current governmental and societal limitations.
First of all, thanks to everyone who sent in a MUMS and MUBB audition! We can confirm that these had been received, but unfortunately, as it stands, we are unable to provide live, in-person playing opportunities in a symphony orchestra or big band. However, being a MUMS member does not just mean being a member of the symphony orchestra – there are still plenty of online activities we have planned which we hope will interest you.
One such example is Manchester University Wind Orchestra (MUWO) and Manchester University String Orchestra (MUSO), who are running weekly online events that involve both socialising and playing. MUWO are currently hosting sectionals for West Side Story Suite on Wednesdays, and MUSO have a social planned for next Tuesday via Zoom.
Also, UMBB (University of Manchester Brass Band) are non-auditioned for this semester and are hosting exclusive online events such as interviews with professional musical directors. Everyone of all abilities is welcome to attend, provided that they are a MUMS member. Links to all our online MUMS events can be found on our Eventbrite page for security reasons:
(Please note that access to all events has to be pre-booked through this Eventbrite link, but if you aren’t able to do so, our VP Alex Cross will be happy to help if you message or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org beforehand)
In addition to MUWO and MUSO, we have an exciting MUMS virtual calendar planned. Also found through Eventbrite, there is an activity scheduled every Tuesday evening exclusively for MUMS members. We have already hosted an ‘In Conversation with Opera North’ and ‘Gamelan Listening Hour’, so keep an eye on our social pages and our new website (uommusicsociety.co.uk) for news on the upcoming events, with some exciting masterclasses in store.
As for wellbeing, we are jointly hosting with the music peer mentoring team Wellbeing Wednesdays. This weekly activity at 3pm has included a ‘Dance Fit’ and ‘Reminisce over photographs’ session which absolutely anyone is welcome to take part in; in weeks to come we are even having a baking event!
MUMS are also running a daily Zoom Coffee Morning, Monday to Friday at 9-9:30am. This has been great for keeping in contact with members of the society, old friends, and a reason to get up early and start the day off nicely. We even had a special guest earlier this week – Lisa the goat! All MUMS members are welcome, and links are posted to MUMS Updates regularly.
MUMS Outreach has some exciting plans for how to reach out to the local community this term through various initiatives, including online teaching, delivering workshops via zoom and multitrack choir projects. It would be fantastic to have as many people involved as possible, and all MUMS members are welcome to get in touch with Zoë (email@example.com) to do so. There will be chances for you to get involved in a wide range of ways, and we have already hosted a training session with Andrea Vogler to give provide members with skills to reach out most effectively.
In addition, we have two sports teams for you to get involved with – FC Music and FC Musica! Both football teams, FC Music play twice a week, on Wednesday (11-a-side) and Saturday (6-a-side), while FC Musica are looking at getting up and running for the year. All MUMS members are welcome to get in touch with Joel Banerjee and Hope Hanby via Facebook or email (firstname.lastname@example.org; email@example.com) and get involved. It is currently unlikely that there will be fixtures until early December given the lockdown, but they will both be raring to go when the time arises.
I hope that this has provided you with more of an idea into what MUMS is currently offering, and I look forward to seeing you at some of these events!
